OpenAI is in early discussions with investors about raising at least $30 billion at a valuation of roughly $1.4 trillion, Bloomberg News reported on September 29, citing people familiar with the matter. The company has not announced a new financing round.
What the reported numbers mean
The $1.4 trillion figure is a proposed pre-money valuation: it excludes the cash that might be raised in the new round. Bloomberg said the talks are at an early stage and the amount, valuation and timing could change. A discussion with investors is not the same as committed capital or a closed deal.
Reuters reported that investors are driving demand for the proposed round and described it as possible bridge financing while OpenAI's public listing is delayed. Neither an investor list nor a closing date has been announced.
How it compares with the last confirmed round
OpenAI said in March 2026 that it had closed a round with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation. That is the most recent completed financing figure cited by the company. The newly reported $1.4 trillion target is a pre-money figure, so the two valuations use different conventions.
OpenAI's March announcement said funding would support compute, research and products. The company has not said how any proceeds from the newly reported round would be allocated. Until terms are agreed and publicly confirmed, the proposed $30 billion raise and $1.4 trillion valuation remain targets rather than established facts.
